“Believe in yourself, listen to your gut, and do what you love.”
But what if you love doing…nothing?!
The ultimate dream of any 30 years young American is to have a good job and make enough money to pay off his debt, keep doing it till he’s free from that burden and has enough dough in the backyard to raise his kids. Jeff Fink was living this dream, yet he wanted something more. Jeff managed a team of 25 IT professionals at an e-commerce giant, and he was a klutz at it.
“People used to tell me that I’m very lucky to be where I am now, with the job market in shreds I should stick to what I have, but I never felt like it. The heart wants what it wants, and I wanted to stay at home with my guitar, sipping freshly squeezed orange juice and binge watch like there’s no tomorrow.” But Jeff knew the problem with doing all that was money.
“I decided to follow my guts, quit my job in search of the Holy Grail- how to make money doing nothing?” Jeff had the same money problems like any other person and quitting a job that paid well made it worse. However, he came up with a well-sought plan on how to make money doing nothing, something his friends mocked him for when he shared his thoughts.
“People thought I’m running away from responsibilities like a headless chicken and I will end up in a dark place, but I had a single goal in mind- I would make money by doing nothing because doing what I love is everything to me.” Jeff loves playing the guitar and his soothing voice is nothing short of a blessing to the ears. Idolizing Jimi Hendrix and Slash, he is very much inspired from their humble beginnings.
When Jeff finally quit his stressful job, he mentioned ‘Laziness’ as a reason to quit. His strategy to make money after quitting the job was very much down to earth- The borderline was to stay at home as much as he can and he planned according to it. So we had a heart to heart with Jeff and his wife Samantha Fink, and they narrated last 2 years of Jeff’s daily struggles which he always took on with a smile on his face.
“By the grace of The Almighty, I have a decent 9 to 5 job at an MNC but Jeff never relied on my income- he said it would defeat the purpose of ‘earning money’ by himself. We tied the knot six years ago and I’ve never seen Jeff as satisfied as he is now.” Samantha walked us through Jeff’s journey and what he did to Make Money by following his whims and fancies.
“Last two years were meticulous. I traveled a lot, spent a lot of time at home, went to bed and woke up whenever I want to, learned a lot of new things, it was beautiful and I hope that it stays the same.” Jeff added. We talked to this cute couple and figured out how Man of the House makes money doing nothing:
How did Jeff make money doing ‘Nothing’?
If you do what you love, it is the best way to relax. Here’s how Jeff ‘worked’ his way to make money doing nothing and is still working to make a career out of it:
· Jeff and his ‘Homely Comforts’
Some people might think it’s childish, but Jeff firmly believes that he would kill for homely comforts wherever he goes. Not only that he just lives there, but he is a neat-freak too. Samantha backed him up “Our place is messy when I leave, and when I come back its all tidy and cleaned up. At first, I thought Jeff hired a maid but then I realized he’s a neat-freak, which is splendid.”
One day, Samantha got to know about this website where you ‘house-sit’ another’s house, take care of their pets, water their plants; and get paid to do all that. “When I found out about Housecarers.com from my work BFF I called Jeff right away and said ‘Babe! I found the perfect job for you!’” He spends quite a lot of time house sitting, takes the guitar with him and earns money for just staying at another’s place. Talk about hitting two birds with one stone!
· Jeff and his Opinions
When there’s wisdom, people start to see things the right way; and if they’re as vocal as Jeff, they won’t mind voicing their opinion to the masses. Jeff signed up with Swagbucks and MoolaDays, two very popular websites where you get paid for taking random surveys. “It started as a recreational activity; a survey a day before bed, and then I totally got hooked to it! Even Samantha loves taking on these opinion polls.”
· Jeff and his Passion
When everything fails, your talent speaks. Everyone amongst us has a talent- maybe we’ve found it, maybe we’re yet to explore. Jeff found his love in the Guitar and he is a natural; let’s not overlook his soulful voice. He recorded himself humming to personal favorites- Stairway to Heaven, Hotel California, Blackbirds; almost anything that he loved to sing. He registered on Fiverr, where one can easily get side-gigs on basis of their talents, and waited. He had no expectations; he just did it on a friend’s suggestion.
Jeff plays at the local bar every weekend and sometimes pairs up with the pianist to make up new songs. He’s planning to launch a YouTube channel soon, all because he linked with the right people on Fiverr.
When Jeff left his job, he went on a two-week long, cross-country vacation from the money he saved for this very purpose. But now that Jeff doesn’t have a job, he wanted a very frugal trip and canceled all his hotel reservations. He rented rooms on VRBO wherever he went to save money and live the town life.
To cover up the cost of his trip, he took a lot of pictures and sold them off online. “I have three thousand-something high-resolution pictures in the hard drive, and I keep uploading a bunch or two every other week on Shutterstock and Dreamstime, the money is good, it covered up almost 70% of my travel costs, and I still got 2500 pictures in store!” Never thought one could pay for vacation by clicking pictures, mate!
· Binge-watch Jeff
What can one do sitting at home all day? Whatever might be the schedule, watching TV is definitely a part of it. Wouldn’t it be awesome to get paid for watching random videos and TV shows? Jeff is an active participant of InboxDollars– he gets paid for watching as many videos as he wants. “If I knew something like this existed, I would’ve watched everything there was to watch- I hated chick-flicks before, but now? I’m the biggest Devil Wears Prada fan because I got paid for watching it.” Jeff believes that with innovation in technology, ‘how to make money doing nothing?’ won’t be a rhetorical question anymore.
What’s next for the Finks?
It’s been two years since Jeff left his stressful job to take on the monsters of unemployment and financial insecurity. However, with immaculate decision-making skills and sheer willpower, Jeff made a breakthrough and here’s how they’re doing as of now:
Jeff and Samantha’s 1-year-old daughter Chloe is already trying her hands on the guitar, as she stays with Jeff all day now that he’s been a stay at home dad for a while. “She’s already humming to Blackbird while Jeff gives her backup with the guitar. She’s going to be a Rockstar!” Samantha is happier than ever now that the baby is well taken care of.
Guest room of the house is now ‘paid guest’ room, with all the spare furniture sold off in the ‘Finks National Garage sale Day Sale’ and the room is regularly rented out to visitors through Airbnb, who can be a better host than Jeff the neat freak and a little kid?
As for the cute little Finks family, life’s real good. “If we say we’re living it, that doesn’t mean we don’t have problems. We’re paying off debt nice and easy, we’ve set up an emergency fund for little Chloe, and Samantha just got a promotion. All’s well if it ends well.” Jeff has decided to break the monotony after two long years and get back in the job market, this time in the media industry. The best part is that one of the two people made money doing nothing for the past two years.
If a couple like that can make it through, we think you should give it a shot too, learn how to make money doing nothing and be so good at it that you don’t need to work anymore! Don’t aim for success if you want it; just do what you love and believe in it, and it will come naturally!
