Yes , that’s my version of “Let’s go to the mall” of How I Met Your Mother, Now before you start asking why I am singing Robin Scherbatsky’s song which even she hated or whether I magically became Vermont’s tourism ambassador, let me tell you straight – Vermont’s Government is going to pay $10,000 to new resident who works remotely.
Yes, pal, you heard it right, the State has signed a new law according to which government will pay the worker, who can work remotely and that money can be used on expenses like costs to relocate, necessary computer equipment and software, internet access and co-working memberships.
This is one of their efforts to increase the population as the state comes as the second smallest population. If you are not sure whether it is a good idea or not, then definitely check out the place before you make a decision, the state has initiated a program “Stay to Stay” which welcomes job seeker to go to the state and meet young professionals and hiring employees.
How to Apply
The law will come into force from 1 January 2019 and application will open on the same day as well. So, mark the date and set an alert, as you will be selected on first come first served basis.
To be eligible
- You must be a full-time employee.
- Must be a resident of Vermont on or after 1 Jan 2019.
- Should be working from home or co-working space outside Vermont.
For the year 2019, the grants limit is set to be $125,000 and it is expected to increase to $250,000 till 2020 so even if you are not planning on next year you can definitely try in 2020. You will be expected to pay the taxes even if you are working for another state but if you are from New York then odds are in your favor as the taxes are very less than in the big apple city.
You might be thinking why Vermont, why not Wyoming or District of Columbia as the trio comes at bottom of the most populous state in the U.S.
It is so because Vermont has the aging population with a third highest median age of 42.7 until last year. And it will remain the same if they are going to depend upon natural childbirth.

Vermont is surrounded by great city like Massachusetts, New York, Quebec, New Hampshire in different direction, although you can never get bored with Vermont’s Natural beauty but if you still need a change of pace, these cities can be proven to be a good choice and will not empty your bags, as you can always have an option to travel frugally.
